MONACA, Pa. – The Penn State Beaver women's basketball team lost to PSUAC rival Penn State Greater Allegheny 62-59 on Wednesday's road game.
PSUAC Player of the Week freshman guard Alexis Cross (Columbiana) led in scoring for Beaver with 18 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Cheyenne Lopez (Center Roswell/Goddard) earned a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Two-time PSUAC Player of the Week sophomore guard Diamond Thomas (Pittsburgh/Carlynton) also contributed 12 points and nine rebounds.
1st quarter: The teams went back and forth on scoring until the Lady Lions pulled ahead with a 12-4 run to take a 16-8 lead at the 1:39 mark. Although Greater Allegheny managed to score final 4 points in the quarter, Beaver kept a 4-point lead heading into the second (16-12).
2nd quarter: The game remained within a few possessions, but Beaver started to feel the pressure slightly, Greater Allegheny hit a 3-point jumper at 4:22 to take the lead from Beaver at 23-21. Beaver trailed by 3 points at halftime (29-26).
3rd quarter: While Greater Allegheny held a slight advantage, Beaver kept the score close until the 1:42 mark, when Greater Allegheny went up by 10 points after a 15-7 run (44-34). Greater Allegheny led 51-40 over Beaver.
4th quarter: As the fourth quarter went underway, Cross knocked down a 3-pointer less than 30 seconds in, which orchestrated a 12-0 run to put Beaver back in the lead (52-51). But at 2:04, Greater Allegheny built up a 5-point lead, and despite a late 3-pointer from Cross, Beaver lost the close match by a final score of 62-59.
Box Score Highlights: Beaver outshot Greater Allegheny 85.7 percent to 31.6 percent from the charity stripe, hitting 12-16 free throws.
With today's loss to Greater Allegheny, Beaver sits at a 9-2 conference record and 15-4 overall for the regular season.
The Lady Lions will host Penn State Hazleton on Friday, Feb. 8, to play in their third of four PSUAC matches scheduled for this week. The game is slated for 6 p.m.
