Late Swing Splits Results as Penn State Beaver Falls, Then Rallies for Comeback Win
Resilience of Penn State Beaver ending in a tough loss followed by a momentum-building victory.
Penn State Beaver experienced a rollercoaster afternoon in Monaca, Pa., dropping a 9–5 decision in the first game of a seven-inning contest before rebounding with a 10–8 comeback win later in the day.
In the opener, Beaver fell behind early as the visitors scored once in the first inning and added two more in the second to take a 3–0 lead. Beaver kept things close and surged ahead in the fourth inning when Daniel Goff launched a three-run home run to tie the game, followed by Rheece Barone's RBI double to give Beaver a 4–3 advantage. The lead was short-lived, however, as the opposition responded in the fifth with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to regain control at 5–4.
Beaver managed to tie the game again in the sixth inning when Philip Betz crossed the plate on a double-play ball, making it 5–5. But the decisive moment came in the seventh, when the visitors erupted for four runs to seal the 9–5 outcome. Despite staying competitive throughout, Beaver was out-hit 11–7 and hurt by four defensive errors.
Goff led the offense, going 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs, while Barone added a double and an RBI and Benjamin Ogle finished 2-for-4. On the mound, Matthew Helmer Jr. pitched four innings with four strikeouts, while Andrew Kristiansen took the loss after allowing six runs in 2.1 innings of relief. The opposing starter, Jeremy Sagun, went the distance, giving up five runs—only two earned—while striking out three.
Despite the loss, Beaver quickly flipped the script in the second game, rallying for a 10–8 victory to improve to 9–20 overall and 5–12 in conference play. After falling behind early again, the Lions steadily chipped away before delivering a decisive five-run sixth inning.
Beaver first got on the board in the second inning when Barone drove in a run to make it 3–1. After being held scoreless in the third, the Lions added two runs in the fourth, highlighted by an aggressive double steal that saw Luke Burkhart swipe home, along with another run scoring on a sacrifice groundout that turned into an unearned run following an error. That cut the deficit to 6–3.
In the fifth inning, Beaver continued its push with RBI singles from Benjamin Ogle and Nathan Doutt, narrowing the gap to 8–5 and setting up the game-changing sixth. The Lions erupted for five runs in that inning to take a 10–8 lead they would not relinquish.
Christopher Cann paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and a walk. Ogle added a 2-for-4 performance with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Doutt finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Goff contributed as well, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.
On the mound, Nicholas Hayes worked five innings before the bullpen duo of EJ Keener and Doutt shut things down over the final two frames, allowing no hits. Doutt closed the game in the seventh, striking out one to secure the win.
Penn State Beaver overcame five defensive errors in the victory, relying on aggressive baserunning and timely hitting to complete the comeback. The combination of a five-run sixth inning and a dominant, hitless finish from the bullpen sealed a hard-earned win and provided a boost of momentum heading into the next stretch of the season.
